Dies ist die Geschichte von Arben, dem Albaner, der sich vom ärmsten Land Europas in das reichste aufmacht. Er braucht Geld, um zu heiraten und den Bräuchen seiner Heimat zu entsprechen. Aber das gelobte Land hat seine eigenen Gesetze. Es heißt den Fremden nicht willkommen. Nur wer keine Skrupel kennt, setzt sich durch. Der Albaner ist einer davon, und er wird den Preis bezahlen. Und lernen, dass der Verlust der Unschuld ihn seinen Zielen nicht näher bringt.

Arben ist Albaner. Er lebt in den Bergen. Mit seinem Vater reist er regelmäßig als Gastarbeiter nach Griechenland, um Geld zu verdienen. Gerade genug, damit die Familie durchkommt. Arbens heimliche Liebe Etleva, die auf einem Hof in der Nähe lebt, wird von ihm schwanger. Doch ihr Vater will Zehntausend Euro für die Hochzeit. Arben verspricht ihr, das Geld aufzutreiben. Er geht nach Deutschland. Aber Deutschland wartet nicht auf Menschen wie ihn. Er hat kein Visum, ist „illegal“, spricht die Sprache nicht. Hier ist er nur „Der Albaner“. Um zu überleben, fängt er bei einer Reinigungsfirma an, für drei Euro die Stunde. Das reicht nicht für die Hochzeit. Alles ändert sich, als er Slatko trifft, der sich eines Tages mit Lungenentzündung in das Abrisshaus schleppt, in dem Arben schläft. Er rettet seinen neuen Freund, und die Freundschaft öffnet Türen: Er findet Arbeit in der Schlepperbranche. Ein menschenverachtendes Geschäft, riskant, aber lukrativ. Arben ist gut, aber er steht auf der falschen Seite. Sein Chef wird von einem polnischen Rivalen getötet. Arben verliert sein Auge und all sein Geld. Allein und unter Zeitdruck wird ihm klar, dass er nur auf sich selbst zählen kann. Mehr Risiko – mehr Geld. Er überfällt den Polen und raubt Tausende von Euros. Mit Mercedes, Anzug und den Taschen voller Euro kommt er zurück nach Albanien. Aber er kommt zu spät. Etleva wurde von ihrem Vater verstoßen, weil sie ihr vaterloses Kind nicht weggeben wollte. Als Arben sie endlich in Tirana findet, hat sie aufgehört, auf ihn zu warten. Er war nicht da, als sein Kind geboren wurde. All sein Geld hilft ihm nicht – er hat sein Versprechen gebrochen.

Arben is Albanian. With his father, he goes back and forth between Greece and Albania to make some money. It’s enough as far as Arben’s family is concerned but it’s not enough to get married. And at 20, Arben is deeply in love with Etleva, a girl who lives on a farm close to his in the mountains. She’s pregnant with Arben’s child but her father wants 10.000 euros for her because he has debts. Arben promises he will get the money within six months and decides to go to Germany. But Germany does not wait for him and in Berlin, Arben has no visa, almost no name, he is ”the Albanian“. To survive, he starts working for a cleaning company, he sleeps outside and makes barely 20 euros per day. Everything changes when he meets Slatko. Slatko is ill, he has pneumonia and Arben saves his life by taking him to a doctor. This friendship opens doors for the young Albanian. He enters the human trafficking business, a business full of risk and money. Arben is good at it but he has chosen the wrong side. His Serbian boss is killed by a Polish rival. Under pressure, alone, with no time left, Arben realises that he can only count on himself. More risk, more money. One night, Arben murders the Pole and steals thousands of euros. Now he can return home to marry Etleva. He has the money, a brand new car, some tailor-made clothes. He’s a new man. But nobody waits for him in Albania. He is too late. Etleva was rejected by her father after giving birth alone. And when Arben finally finds her in Tirana, love has turned into hate. Etleva has stopped waiting. Arben wasn’t by her side when their child was born. He did not fulfill his promise.
